Jen Murck (Blogger-in-Chief)

Jen Profile PicHi! I’m Jen, a stay-at-home mom who is passionate about surface pattern design. I love patterns and just can’t get enough!

One of my first memories is of visiting a design store with my mom and trying to steal one of the wallpaper swatch books so I could take the ‘pretty pictures’ home with me. (Luckily my mom caught me before I made it out the door)

Years later when I became a stay-at-home mom, I quickly discovered that the only way I would survive the craziness of parenthood was to find a hobby that was mine and only mine. Luckily, a dear friend suggested I take a surface pattern design class thru Skillshare. (I think she was tired of hearing me talk pattern)

Once I made my first pattern, I was hooked. Since then I have experimented and built tons of patterns, and have had a blast learning everything I can about the topic.

When I started this blog my plan was to share my experiments and use this space as a place to catalogue my design work. Since then it has morphed into something much bigger then that. Now I use it as a platform to share the work of my fellow designers and to support and empower members of our surface pattern design community.

My goal is to make this blog all about YOU!

If you’d like to learn more about my decision to start this blog, read my post on vulnerability.

Gin Das Neves (Regular Contributor)

Gin Profile PicHello! I am a textile designer from Sydney, Australia and have been working with textiles in one form or other for most of my life. I’ve worked as a designer and costume maker for opera, ballet, film and theatre and am currently a freelance textile designer and maker for my label, The Happy Artisan. I love ethnic and cultural textiles and incorporate vintage fabrics and trims from around the world (mostly from Afghanistan, Mexico and Southeast Asia) into my handmade pieces.

As the author behind Gin’s Journey, I hope to give readers a glimpse of textile design through the lens of someone who is new to the field. I will show you how I research and illustrate my work, and will share with you my successes and failures. I will also bring you along as I dive into the business side of things…the little steps behind trying to get a small business off the ground. Mostly I want to share my journey, who knows where I will end up?
